The Protector Of Travel

The one thing I never leave the house without is my St. Christopher medallion. It is a very important piece of jewelry to me. Not because of its colors, or if it matches my outfit, but for a more special reason.

For those wondering who he is, St. Christopher is the patron saint of travelers. I was first introduced to the special medallions in my teens! Seems like so long ago, but really it was just a few years. It was given as a gift and my mother explained to me the signifigance of it. I was instantly in love with it.

Wearing this medallion around my neck gives me a sense of peace whenever I step in a plane, a train, or an automobile. I rarely take it off my neck, unless I’m showering or sleeping. It’s become a staple to my wardrobe.

It was especially important to me when I was studying at Maynooth. Aside from my mother giving me prayer cards and rosary beads (can you tell we’re a Catholic family?), I had my St. Christopher medallions hanging around my neck all the time.

My checklist for traveling is as follows: ticket, passport, phone, clothes, St. Christopher necklace. If there was some turbulence during my flights, or a train was delayed, I would instantly start  my necklace. It gave me a sense of comfort during some stressful traveling situations.

I also learned St. Christopher is the protector of surf! In the 60s, surfers would trade these as a symbol for “going steady.” Cute, right? When I went surfing in Co. Sligo, Ireland, I made sure to wear mine as I paddled through the waves. It made me feel just a little more like a surfer to have it on.

I’m sure I’d still be safe if I wandered outside without my necklace on one day. I’ve grown so used to having this “security blanket” of sorts that I choose not to. It not only gives me a piece of mind, but my family as well. (Like I mentioned above, our religion is important to us.)

So I bet you’re wondering, I like to travel. I want to have someone watching over me. Where can I get one of these awesome necklaces?

Check out! I got my favorite medallion from this site and they have tons of cool colors and sizes available.

Psst…you could get 10% off if you use the code “ErinLanahan10”

I know you might be reading this and thinking, “I’m not really religious though.” That’s okay! The necklace is another symbol for beach culture, and you don’t have to be attending church to sport a super cool necklace.

For all my fellow travelers out there looking for a super cool accessory to show off on your trips, this is the one thing I would say everyone should get.

Safe travels!
